ABBA, Cults And Enlightened People

Huh??? What does this old pop group have anything to do with the above? Well, I find that ABBA have covered just about every hue of the human condition in their songs: from broken hearts to broken marriages, from teenhood to growing old, from slaves to masters, from Reality to Dream. And they did it all from the point of view of a very ordinary person – you and I. Or as they sang once… Everyone is a freak.

Yes. No one knows exactly what the hell they are doing. Our states continuously change, our minds bounce to and fro, our bodies renew cells every so many months and years… What remains?

ABBAABBA’s last, not widely known albums reflect sophistication and inner growth of a human who had seen just about every side of human experience. I posited somewhere that Enlightenment is simply a maturation of the human mind that has gone through many trials and tribulations of life and learnt its lessons IN FULL.

This is why books on existential matters cannot ‘teach’ anyone about existential matters. One has to ‘exist’ and ‘go through’ life to finally see it for what it is. Books disconnected from own personal experience – lead to the mind of its bearer lost in inner dialogues on ‘who am I’ and ‘what is Self’ and ‘what is consciousness’ etc.etc.. All pretty useless in the face of this disconnect.

The separation between inner mentation and outer life as you know it every moment.

They are one. Inseparable.

Below is one of my favourites, together with the lyrics. The music and the words have  strong sinister undertones. I will leave the interpretation to the reader.

THE PIPER

They came from the hills
And they came from the valleys and the plains
They struggled in the cold
In the heat and the snow and in the rain
Came to hear him play
Play their minds away

We’re all following a strange melody
We’re all summoned by a tune
We’re following the piper
And we dance beneath the moon
We’re following the piper
And we dance beneath the moon for him
And we dance beneath the moon
(Sub luna saltamus)

They came from the south
From the west and the north and from the east
They waited for the man
Like a parish is waiting for the priest
Longed to hear him play
Play their minds away

We’re all following a strange melody
We’re all summoned by a tune
We’re following the piper
And we dance beneath the moon
We’re following the piper
And we dance beneath the moon for him
And we dance beneath the moon
(Sub luna saltamus)

He gave them a dream
He seduced everybody in the land
The fire in his eyes
And the fear was a weapon in his hand
So they let him play
Play their minds away

We’re all following a strange melody
We’re all summoned by a tune
We’re following the piper
And we dance beneath the moon
We’re following the piper
And we dance beneath the moon for him
And we dance beneath the moon

And we dance beneath the moon!

Dance, humans. Dance to the tune of not your own.

  1. ABBA didn’t went so far with the meaning of the song, but I see where you took it.
“They are one. Inseparable.” To me this conclusion can be attained through logic. Inside/outside is just a concept, a habitual topographic location. One can directly influence some things inside just as one can directly influence some thing outside, and some things inside are beyond your control just like other things outside (I won’t get into “do I really influence anything” or else I should just shut up). Ideas coming up in the mind are just like the ideas of other people that you hear of, etc.
I can understand this logically, but that’s all. Words, ideas, all the same. Does it take me anywhere? Nope. And even if it does something to me… I remember a long time ago when I was pretty deep in my own version of spiritual work, I would ponder of things of life and then getting to some “deep” conclusion covered in a strong emotional response (some ecstatic feeling), like a confirmation… but I always felt afterwards a doubt about it “but I already knew these things, what’s with all the drama about it, am I not fooling myself?”
“Books disconnected from own personal experience” – what do you mean by personal experience?

    1. Logic is useful when assembling the flat pack furniture.

Personal experience.. what do you not understand about this? If one never went hungry – how can they understand what hunger is? The same goes for any kind of experience. Direct. Personal.

      1. and what am i but an assembly of furniture… of the few things i can show, one is logic. beyond these there’s nothing i can say.
i needed the clarification because in the enlightenment business lingo “personal” can have more meanings. for instance i could say that the direct experience is a-personal while personal would mean the indirect experience, filtered by personal traits, book reading, habits, etc.

  2. “Enlightenment is simply a maturation of the human mind that has gone through many trials and tribulations of life and learnt its lessons IN FULL.”

By that definition…I dunno: I think Ammachi is ‘enlightened’. I’ve maybe come across one or two others who come close to where I imagine she’s at.

    How about you?

      1. That’s the cop out answer, of course – it allows the non-enlightened westerner to continue in their fantasies, given the implication that ‘anyone’, behaving ‘anyhow’, could therefore be ‘enlightened’ – but, conversely, it’s probably the right answer also. 😉

Maybe if I asked ‘who has learned their lessons IN FULL?’ it would be more useful. But, again, hard to imagine this constitutes more than a handful at any one time.

        Met any?
